Due to a relatively affluent local population and a steady stream of caffeine-hungry travelers, there are ample agreeable cafes to choose from throughout Sucre’s whitewashed city center. Not sure where to go? Culture Trip has compiled a list of the best coffeehouses in town.

Abis Cafe

Cafe, Restaurant, European

Something of a Sucre institution, this popular Belgian-run cafe gets plenty of business thanks to its convenient location on the city’s main plaza. The food and coffee aren’t bad either, including a few more hearty options such as wings, burgers, and some delicious European-style meatballs. Grab a chair on the outdoor patio for an al fresco experience or start up a conversation with the friendly owner in the elegant indoor space.

Coffee Click

Cafe, Contemporary

One for the millennials, Coffee Click has a tablet attached to most tables so their social media savvy clientele can browse Facebook as they wait to be served. Of course, anyone wealthy enough to frequent such a place would surely carry their own smartphone. Nevertheless, the coffee here is surprisingly good so it’s worth checking out for the true aficionado. The food, however, can be a little hit and miss at times.

Another excellent option on Sucre’s Plaza 25 de Mayo, Cosmo serve up a tempting menu of international favorites and some mouthwatering Bolivian dishes as well. The highlight, however, is the full English breakfast, a hearty fry up which is the perfect antidote for travelers who may have indulged a little too heavily in the city’s nightlife the evening before. Hangovers aside, fast WiFi, strong coffee, and delicious pastries are reason enough to linger.

Cafe Time & Coffee

Cafe, Contemporary, Dessert

A relative newcomer to Sucre’s cafe scene, this elegant old-world coffeehouse has built up a steady client base for its quality beans and delightful desserts (try the passionfruit cake). Situated across the road from Parque Bolivar, it’s a pleasant place to relax while visiting this part of the city, particularly for the outdoor seating that overlooks the park.

Metro Cafe

Cafe, South American, Contemporary

As the third and arguably the best coffeehouse on the city’s main plaza, Metro’s superb traditional cafe menu is a hit with its well-heeled clientele. Expect to find the usual sandwiches, wraps, and salads, as well as a few more exotic options such as goulash and Asian style soup. Still got room for dessert? The Oreo chocolate cheesecake is a winner.

Condor Cafe

Cafe, Bar, Restaurant, Vegetarian, Vegan, Contemporary, South American

As the culinary arm of a well regarded local NGO, Cafe Condor offers a wide range of ethically sourced and environmentally friendly vegetarian fare which is tasty enough to satisfy even the most militant carnivore. Just after a coffee? Their freshly ground beans really hit the spot, while the friendly and inclusive ambiance make it a great place to hang out and soak up the traveler vibe. Best of all, all profits go towards supporting disadvantaged local communities.

Café Mirador

Cafe, Contemporary

More famous for its panoramic views than the menu, Cafe Mirador is a hit with locals and tourists alike for its stunning vistas of terracotta roofs and whitewashed edifices which characterize this magnificent colonial city. Situated on a hill alongside the picturesque Plaza Recoleta, the cafe serves up a solid selection of pizzas, pasta, sandwiches, and some decent distilled coffee.
