Best Places To Eat On Taveuni Island, Fiji

Hannah Bergin

One of the most beautiful islands in the South Pacific, Taveuni – the ‘garden of Fiji’ – continually entices travelers to its shores. There is just a small selection of places to eat, so we’ve rounded up the best options.

Fijian Produce

Vunibokoi Restaurant at the Tovu Tovu Resort

Restaurant, Fijian

The Tovu Tovu Resort is owned by the Peterson family who run their cozy bures like a household. They welcome guests as if they were relatives. They manage the resort’s Vunibokoi Restaurant in a similar fashion. Their daily menu is inspired by the archipelago’s colorful hybrid culture, featuring traditional Fijian dishes which draw upon Indian, Asian, and European cuisine. All of the ingredients are sourced from the village garden, neighboring farm, or surrounding ocean. This is Fijian food at its freshest and most authentic.

Tramonto

Bar, Restaurant, Vegetarian

Tramonto is perhaps Taveuni’s most popular local restaurant. Perched upon a cliffside overlooking the Pacific, this rustic little restaurant is open-aired, continuously veiled in the warm ocean breeze and flooded in natural light. It buzzes in the evenings, when a large crowd of residents and tourists gather to enjoy drinks at its bar, indulge in barbecues or grills (depending on the day of the week), and watch the night settle over the archipelago.

Coconut Grove

Resort, Hotel

Coconut Grove’s idyllic stretch of beachfront cottages is accompanied by a gorgeous ocean-view restaurant, long renowned as one of the best places to eat on Taveuni Island. The restaurant specializes in fish and seafood. However, its extensive menu includes curries, pastas and meat dishes too. Dinner is often accompanied by acoustic musicians who serenade guests with island melodies while they enjoy panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel also hosts ‘village nights,’ when locals come to perform meke – a traditional Fijian dance.

The Salty Fox Bar and Grill

Bar, Oceanian

Adjacent to the Taveuni Dive Resort, the Salty Fox Bar and Grill is very much a social hub with a relaxed and cheerful garden-party vibe. Here, guests gather at dusk to share the day’s adventures with one another. Tables are set on a patio next to the resort’s infinity pool, which overlooks the spectacular Somosomo Strait, the channel of water that lies between Taveuni and its north-eastern neighbor Vanua Levu. There’s a fantastic selection of exotic cocktails.

Nakia Resort

Resort, Hotel

The selection of dishes at the Nakia Resort’s restaurant is almost sure to satisfy any taste. While serving up the Pacific, Indian, and Chinese fare that makes up the Fijian diet, Nakai’s waterfront spot also offers some American, Mexican, and European dishes. It also caters for vegetarians and young children. The menu is seasonally dependent. Many of the ingredients are grown in the resort’s organic garden, meaning that only the freshest and tastiest are used.
