Is your travel group full of foodies? We have itineraries in Italy, Japan, Turkey and much more that place great emphasis on local cuisine, but this is our selection of the best food tours to book as a private trip.
There’s plenty of pros for going private. Obviously it means you can keep the guest-list locked down, so you can enjoy memory-making travel experiences with only the ones you love most. It also allows for far greater flexibility on travel dates, group sizes (minimum of 4) and even age requirements. Raohe Night Market, Taipei, Taiwan

A Taste of Taiwan by Train

East Asian cuisine has grown rapidly in popularity over the last decade or so, and we have trips that include foodie experiences in Japan, South Korea and China, but our pick of the bunch is the lesser-appreciated Taiwan. This island nation’s culture and cuisine has been influenced by all of those countries, but the vibrancy of its night markets is unmatched. Our loop tour of the island includes guided tours of Fengjia and Raohe night markets, both in Taipei, as well a visit to Taichung City, the country’s culinary capital. You’ll even learn from the masters with an expert cooking class at a local culinary school – don’t worry, they’ll give you a few recipes to take home and impress your friends with.

Table full of food in a traditional Moroccan restaurant

Epic Morocco

Food plays a huge part in the culture and community of Morocco. It’s not just about delicious lamb dishes and home-baked breads, it’s also about gathering together with friends and family to share your creations. You’ll experience this in the purest form on our comprehensive 11-day tour of Morocco, when you visit a local family home in Fes. Here you’ll be treated to a home-cooked dinner and have the chance to speak to actual locals about the importance of food to Moroccan people. The following day in Fes includes lunch at an iconic cafe, while traditional lunches await in a Saharan Gnawa village and a Berber village in the Atlas Mountains. Our final destination is Marrakech, teeming with incredible street food, which you’ll discover on a guided food trail of the old medina – snail soup, anyone? Our last full day also includes a lunchtime Moroccan cooking masterclass in the city.

Person cutting into khachapuri cheese bread in Georgia

Georgia and the Caucasus

There are many reasons that make Georgia one of the most underrated destinations in Europe or Asia (it’s a bit of both), but food is right up there as a main attraction. Georgian culture is among the oldest on the planet. In fact the oldest known winemaking traditions in the world were discovered here, and you’ll get to learn first-hand about ancient fermentation techniques on day four, as well as a wine tasting in Tbilisi on day five. You’ll also meet a local chef at the farmer’s market, where you’ll pick up the ingredients required for your expert lunchtime cooking class. Visit a local family to sample home-baked bread and Churchkhela, a sweet treat made with nuts and grapes, and don’t forget to try Georgia’s national dish, khachapuri, a beloved cheesy bread dish devoured all over the country on a daily basis.

Food at the Ben Thanh food market in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam

Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam

This border-crossing epic across Southeast Asia gives you and your foodie friends the chance to compare the cuisines of three excellent culinary destinations. We’ll start in Thailand with a guided tour of Bangkok. You’ll be whizzed around the city in Tuk Tuks on an incredible food tour that takes in street food vendors, local restaurants and night markets. In the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, you’ll embark on an urban forage food tour, which gives you the chance to sample Khmer fried rice and freshly grilled meat skewers, among many other local delicacies. Our final destination is Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City, where we’ll meet a local chef at Ben Thanh market. After a tour of the market, plus some key purchases, we’ll head to the cooking school for a three-course masterclass. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also gather for a family-style farewell dinner later that evening – hope you’re hungry!
