Photographer Alexander Mourant Captures His Trip From Cairo to Cape Town

Mourant, a graduate in photography from Falmouth University, England, set off from Cairo on an epic road trip that would last five months and cover thousands of kilometres overland. Over the course of the journey he photographed the people and landscapes he encountered, and how the two interact.

He travelled by car with members of the RAW Foundation, which aims to educate and engage young people about sustainability. As such, many of his photographs highlight the dire situation the continent is facing with litter and pollution.

Rather than focussing on the obvious sights and attractions along the way, he drilled down into the personalities of the land and people in a way that few photographers before him have. His upbringing as a farmer’s child in Jersey, Channel Islands, helped cement a relationship with the land that shines through in many of the pictures that he selected for final inclusion in his series Odyssey.

Over the course of the journey, Mourant explored Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. He shot mainly on film, and returned home to sort through the pictures in order to select a few for the final exhibition.
